Conference Notes

Much was made of the 36 point first half performance Kobe Bryant turned in last week in the first game of Shaq’s suspension. Last night, I witnessed the collegiate version, a 34 point run by Gonzaga’s standout senior guard Dan Dickau against the Loyola Marymount Lions.

Technically, Dickau’s point machine was more productive per minute as the pro’s play 4 more minutes a half than in college, but I do understand that playing an NBA team is a little more challenging than the lowly Lions. This was a fitting weekend crescendo for Dickau, who unsuccessfully battled WCC challenger Pepperdine Friday evening, while trying to shake the ever present NBA scouting of Chicago Bulls’ Jerry Krause.

Behind Dickau’s powerful first half, Gonzaga cruised to a 94-60 victory over LMU in Los Angeles. The Bulldogs may have been letting off steam after giving the dangerous Waves of Malibu the conference lead in a disappointing loss Friday 88-79. The Waves continue to lead the WCC with a convincing, balanced victory over cellar-bound Portland 109-88.
