She’s Got Game
To give our Hoopville Fans a true representation of college hoops, it’s only fair to include coverage of the women’s game. With attendance numbers growing across the nation, competition levels rising consistently and the tournament drawing near, interest in women’s NCAA hoops is mounting. For now, here are some not-to-be-missed games for the weekend of February 9th and 10th, as well as a quick look back at one of last week’s hot topics.

Whose Got Game This Week?
UConn will have to protect their undefeated standing once again this Sunday, February 10th, when they face conference rival Virginia Tech for the second time this season. The pressure is on Tech to prove it was more than just home court advantage at their Cassell, (Coliseum) that kept the Hokies close last time. The team from Blacksburg kept up with the Huskies to the finish, though UConn squeezed out a 59-50 victory, their closest contest of the season. Senior and Big East player of the week, Asjha Jones, who led all scorers with 19 points at their last match up, will guide the Huskies into battle.

Colorado, currently ranked 13th, travels to Ames, Iowa to face the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones this Saturday, February 9th. The Buffs are definitely on a hot streak, having won eight in a row, with an upset of Texas Tech and a previous victory over Iowa State firmly chalked up in their win column. The Cyclone’s won’t take this contest lying down though, as conference pride is at stake when the Buffs arrive on Cyclone turf. CU is directed by head coach Ceal Barry from the sidelines, and by the dynamic backcourt duo of Mandy Nightingale and Jenny Roulier on the court.

Even Goliath Takes It On The Chin
It’s always news in the sports community when Tennessee’s Lady Vols fall victim to an opponent. Currently at 19-2, this had occurred only once this season, when the 3rd-ranked Vols were outplayed by UConn back in January. But sixth-ranked Vanderbilt’s 76-59 victory last week was a hat trick of sorts, holding the Lady Vols to their lowest point total of the season, and their first conference loss of the year (second overall). Not bad for Vandy, who had the strength of a sellout home crowd behind them. Their rematch will come in Knoxville next Saturday, February 16th.
