Fantasy Update: Conley Transfers

by Rick Young

Well, it happened, my number one fantasy player, Jason Conley – VMI, decided to bolt for the higher playing fields of the Big 12 Conference, choosing this past week to transfer to the Missouri Tigers. This is a major blow to any fantasy team owner who had Conley on their roster, as he’ll be ineligible until the second semester next year. Frankly, this year he has been a disappointment with his lack of performance, especially after his wonderful freshman year. Team owners beware, he won’t put up the same numbers he did for VMI as freshman or sophomore; he’ll be an average player in a great conference instead of a star player in a small conference. Basically, “little fish in the big sea”.

Top Players:

Carmelo Anthony, freshman forward – Syracuse, is still my current number one fantasy player. His play has subsided yet, no wear down, he’s truly gifted. At this point in the season, I would expect that he’s not sitting on your bench (unless you are intentionally trying to lose!) for the rest of the season. His numbers will probably decrease in conference play, but nevertheless he’ll still be a very strong player.

Kyle Korver, senior forward – Creighton, is the star player on the college basketball’s surprise team. He’s one of the best shooters in the game, highly accurate from all areas, and very skilled all-around performer. He’s currently 1-A on my list of players, just a hair behind Carmelo Anthony. He should still put up great numbers in conference play.

Conference Play . . . Calling all Players!

This is the time of the year where you’ll really discover what type of team and player you truly have. Do you have the team to make a run? Or has your team done it’s best playing the “cupcakes” of college basketball? Only time will tell, but that time is most certainly . . . NOW!

The scores will be lower, games will be tighter, and the fun has just started. Watch your weekly schedules of games, make sure you are putting your best lineup out there. If you’re player is in a smaller conference, he should be able to keep closer to his average, than the major conference player. As the level of play heats up, and the push to get to the NCAA tournament gets closer, watch these players closely. If you start seeing a slip in your players performance, bench them for a week, see how they start adjusting to the harder competition.

Wishing you nothing but the best in your fantasy league . . . keep balling!
