Carmelo Anthony
Notes: Second Team All-American, 2002-03 Freshman of the Year, MVP 2003 Final Four
The Skinny:

Anthony can flat-out score, whether on the post, off the dribble, or shooting from long range. This well-built athlete has great offensive skills, as he’s capable of handling the ball and can pass it, won’t take a lot of bad shots and scores with the best of them. He rebounds at both ends of the floor, is fine defensively, and is a very charismatic young man who will be great for a team’s chemistry.

At times Anthony settles for the jump shot, and doesn’t get into a scoring rhythm early. He is usually at his best when he starts his scoring close to the basket and expands out, as shooting the ball isn’t his forte even though he’s very capable.

Anthony should be one of the first three players picked, and has a long career ahead of him.

You know you’re in good shape when you finish in third place and can still get a player the caliber of Carmelo Anthony. The Nuggets may already have some small forwards on the roster, but they can’t pass up the chance on getting a guy who not only carried his team to the NCAA title, but has as a complete game as he does. There has yet to be a freshman who’s entered the draft early as ready as Anthony is.

. . . I thought about comparing this team to the 1990 UNLV team, for their swagger, athleticism and the Warrick/Anthony combination but instead think their closest fit is the 1995 Arkansas team. Neither coach got their proper due for building a very strong team that season and neither was expected to do too much entering the season but thanks to a stifling defense they found their way to the Final Four. . .

We don’t need him. Let him keep wearing his NBA headband, his socks with the silhouette of Jerry West on them, and worst of all, the “King James” label on his teeth. College basketball is better off without the prospect of LeBron James gracing Chapel Hill, Durham, Columbus or anywhere else with his exaggerated presence. . .

Admit it, you watched. If you’re a fan of basketball, you likely tuned in last Thursday night to ESPN2’s broadcast of the St. Vincent-St. Mary’s versus Oak Hill Academy contest to catch a glimpse of LeBron James, who if you buy all the hype, is the biggest thing to hit basketball since James Naismith poked holes in the bottom of the peach baskets. . .
