Mickael Pietrus
Notes:
The Skinny:

Pietrus could be the best athlete out of this year’s foreign crop. The
“Michael Jordan of France” has been known for his leaping ability and
scintillating dunks. He loves to take the ball to the basket and finish at the
rim. While perimeter shooting has been a weakness, he has improved on that
skill in the past two seasons and is now credible from NBA three-point range.
His ball-handling does need work and like other Europeans, will need to learn
the nuances of NBA-level defense other than simply using his athletic ability.

NBA teams are enamored with Pietrus’ athletic ability as European players
typically do not have the physical tools that Pietrus has. He’ll need to be
refined, but in today’s NBA, he’ll find time on the floor based on his
athleticism alone. He has been projected as anywhere from a Top Ten pick to
the middle of the first round.

Jerry West is no doubt the standard when it comes to brilliant GM’s, and most think he’ll have something up his sleeve with this selection. Which makes this pick an obvious – he’s got to take a foreign player. Enter Mickael Pietrus. He may be a little raw, but he’s ultra-athletic and explosive. With the tenuous state of the Grizzlies backcourt, Pietrus should be the man here.
