The Morning Dish – Monday, August 25th

Clemons Released: Former Missouri guard Ricky Clemons was released from jail yesterday, having completed his 60-day sentence for false imprisonment of his former girlfriend. Clemons left the Boone County Jail with two bags of possessions, but did not answer questions, and has two years of supervised probation still to serve. Clemons was dismissed from Missouri when he violated his work release program schedule, and recently has been the focus of both NCAA and FBI investigation.

New Bears: This year’s Baylor basketball squad has shaped up in the past few days, following the hiring of former Valparaiso head coach Scott Drew. Guard Ellis Kidd has announced that he will stay with the team, as he was not at Drew’s press conference on Friday. Matt Sayman and Terrance Thomas had never wavered in their commitment to the team, and two others that had requested their release have decided to stay in Waco – R.T. Guinn and transfer Harvey Thomas. Walk-on guard Will Allen, who had announced that he was leaving the team earlier this summer, has rejoined the team, and another walk-on, Turner Phipps has joined as well. Freshman guard Carl Marshall also arrived this weekend in time for the start of school today.

Lucas Waiver: The Big 12 Conference has cleared the way for former Baylor guard John Lucas III to transfer to Oklahoma State. Lucas, who left the Baylor program following the resignation of head coach Dave Bliss, was already covered by an NCAA decision last week to waive the one-year penalty for transfer students, but the Big 12 also had a rule prohibiting transfers between member institutions. This looks like good news for new Texas guard Kenny Taylor, who transferred from Baylor last week, but has not received a Big 12 waiver.
