Syracuse is struggling right now, but don’t blame Rick Jackson.
The Orange’s senior forward is making the biggest impact on his team of any Big East forward, according to the latest Total Impact Quotient ratings for the conference. With a TIQ of 16.2 points per 40 minutes, Jackson has been playing at a high level despite Syracuse’s four-game losing streak.
In fact, during the past three weeks, Jackson is shooting an impressive 64.7 percent from the field, making 37 of 57 shots. In addition, he’s averaging 10.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. So what’s wrong with this team?
In short, the guards are taking too many shots instead of facilitating the Orange’s frontcourt. In the past six games, the backcourt trio of Scoop Jardine (TIQ of 7.3 points), Brandon Triche (TIQ of 5.6 points) and Dion Waiters (TIQ of 6.7 points) have combined to shoot 58 of 155 from the field, or 37.4 percent. They’re hurting the team with too many shots early in possessions without making a strong effort to feed Jackson in the post.
In the loss at Marquette, Boeheim benched Waiters, who reportedly cursed at the coach near the end of the Orange’s loss to Seton Hall last week. Without Waiters, the Orange had only two true guards available against the Golden Eagles.
For Syracuse to build another winning streak, the Orange apparently need to follow a fairly straightforward recipe: look for Jackson in the post every possession. The big man is playing extraordinarily well despite playing nearly every minute of every game recently. With more selective shooting by the guards, Syracuse should become more efficient on offense, and the TIQs of Jardine, Triche and Waiters should improve to something better than just average for guards in the Big East.
