Siena Women get ‘Defensive’ in Win over St. Peter’s

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – It has been a year-long struggle for the St. Peter’s women. Their offensive efficiency is 79, quite a bit below the generally accepted targeted 100. The defense is a healthy 92 efficiency. Good defense is commendable, but a 79 offensive efficiency will not get you many wins.

On Saturday, St. Peter’s’ efficiency hit only 64 on the offensive end as Siena defeated St. Peter’s 57-40 at the Yanitelli Center.

The Four Factors:

Effective FG Percentage FT Rate Off. Rebound Percentage Turnover Rate
Siena 45 27 43 34
St. Peter’s 31 15 40 33

The Siena defense was the story and deserves the credit. Not simply in allowing forty points, but an eFG mark of 31 percent that included an 0-8 performance beyond the three-point arc. Siena also forced 21 turnovers, accounting for the Peahens’ 33% turnover rate.

The Saints’ efficiency was a very modest 88. Chalk that up to a respectable St. Peter’s defense that held Siena to 41 percent shooting and saw them commit 22 turnovers.

The two teams started slowly on offense. The score was tied at 13 late the first half. Siena’s offense heated up, and a 15-2 run the last few minutes saw the Saints enter the half with a 28-15 lead. It was one St. Peter’s could not overcome.

Cristina Centeno led the way with 21 points. The Siena junior enjoyed a homecoming, as she played her high school ball at nearby Marist High school in Bayonne. Centeno shot 7 of 13 from the field and 5 of 6 from the line.

Serena Moore added 15 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-2 senior forward is a multidimensional player, effective inside yet skilled enough to handle the ball on the perimeter.

For St. Peter’s, it was a rough day offensively for virtually everyone. Junior center Quiana Porter came off the bench to score 14 points and grab 9 rebounds. Porter shot 6 of 12 from the field. No other Peahen could approach that 50% mark.
