Talking Hoops With Ted Sarandis – May 17, 2017

by - Published May 18, 2017 in Columns, Podcasts

Welcome to the latest edition of Talking Hoops With Ted Sarandis. The off-season news cycle feels a bit slower than usual this time around, but there is plenty to talk about starting with something not long before we recorded the podcast.

The NBA Draft Lottery was held on Tuesday night, and the end result was close to what was expected. The top three picks will go to the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers. The only team that was projected to have a top three pick but did not is Phoenix, who dropped to the fourth pick.

Talking Hoops With Ted Sarandis – February 3, 2017

by - Published February 3, 2017 in Columns, Podcasts

Welcome to the latest edition of Talking Hoops With Ted Sarandis. We have a lot to get to, starting with a couple of teams that look like national championship contenders.

We start with Kansas, who had two great wins in the past week at Kentucky and against Baylor. The latter reminds everyone that Kansas is the team to beat in the Big 12 until someone knocks them off, and it’s not happening just yet.  The Jayhawks are very tough to beat at Allen Fieldhouse, and they continue to ride the play of Josh Jackson and Frank Mason III as leaders of a short but very effective rotation, and also one not loaded with size.

The Morning Dish – Saturday, December 10, 2016

by - Published December 10, 2016 in The Morning Dish

It wasn’t the best of times at the end of last season and then during the early part of the off-season for several Big Ten programs. The reasons were a little different, but Minnesota and a couple of others not only finished near the bottom of the conference, but were not exactly trending in the right direction. Naturally, coaches like Richard Pitino tried to keep a positive outlook. With the season here and about ten games old for many teams, however, there’s a lot of reason for that in Pitino’s case.

Last season, the Golden Gophers were 8-23 overall and 2-16 in the Big Ten. The athletic director who hired Pitino, Norwood Teague, was long gone, and that never helps a coach even though he has a name with some cachet in college basketball. Then it got worse, from the sex tape fiasco involving Kevin Dorsey (who has since transferred) to Reggie Lynch getting arrested, though he was subsequently reinstated. Also, an audit showed that Pitino spent more than double his allowance for private jet travel since he was hired. While the private jet usage was approved by Teague, the news of it wasn’t something the program needed.

2015 Spalding Hoophall Classic – Monday notes

by - Published January 21, 2015 in Recruiting

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The last day of the Spalding Hoophall Classic may have had only five games, but it was the big one, full of TV matchups. There was plenty of star power, and the only game not nationally televised was a great game to start the day that came right down to the final buzzer.

The first three games of the day were all close, while the fourth was close until the fourth quarter. The last one wasn’t quite as close as the final score might suggest. The constant was the talent, and although each team had star performers, most also had good support players and/or younger talents that helped out and are also worth noting and watching in the future.
