Notre Dame may have already lost any slim hope of an at-large bid, but a loss like Wednesday night’s is tough to stomach all the same. Plus the Flyers cruise on the road, the Wildcats can still win again, and some Tigers are going in the wrong direction as the regular season winds down.
The last game of the day was a big one in Ames, where the home team got a much-needed quality win. Plus the other team lost more than a game, an ACC power’s scoring struggles continue, and two teams got big road wins on the day.
In a season where even the best teams are very capable of losing games to teams they shouldn’t, one team almost did twice and then won a tournament in impressive fashion. Plus a tournament runner-up is without a few players, a few helpers were handed out without scoring, and a few other results as the tournaments finish up.
The Northeast Conference continues to regroup as top players are now routinely transferring up from conference schools. This is changing the challenge of running a program that has hit several member schools.
Super mega ultra conferences can collect members like teenage boys once accumulated baseball cards. They can even brag about having 10, 11, 12 NCAA Tournament contenders. The Northeast Conference is always competitive, but this time around there is another important storyline with it – a potentially bright future with young talent.
There is no substitute for double round-robin conference schedules where every team plays each other twice, home and away. For those of us who thoroughly enjoy and believe in the double round-robin format, the Atlantic Sun and Northeast Conference have been as good as it gets this year.
As much as almost any teams in the country, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s are programs both known for offense, but their latest meeting was one marked with defense.
Thursday night provided a flurry of activity, good games and most notable results, but few games this year have drawn us in more at the end like the Conference USA tilt between UAB and Old Dominion did.
Almost certainly now, Monday night will bring us a matchup between No. 1 and No. 2. And we won’t even have to wait a week to see it.
