You may have forgotten about one of the modern day blueblood programs, and for somewhat understandable reason, but they reminded us that they are still around on Sunday. Plus the road is the great equalizer for one powerhouse program, a couple of mid-major races remain hotly contested, and a tie is broken in the Patriot League for now.
For Villanova, times were not always this good, as it was a journey to get to the point of winning two national titles in three years and being poised for more. Plus some new language could go into one contract, more coaching jobs are filled, and plenty of NBA Draft decisions are continuing to be made.
Road wins are gold in college basketball, and Mississippi State and Michigan both had chances for major non-conference road wins Tuesday night. One of the two capitalized.
The NIT is down to two teams after the semifinals. The coach of one of those teams never imagined his team would be here back in the fall.
It’s never too early to start picking up quality wins, even when you compete in a conference as tough as the Big East. And there’s no better attention-grabbing win at this time of the non-conference season than to knock off an undefeated team.
An otherwise non-descript non-conference game in mid-November included one of the more tantalizing-and enjoyable-scenes we will see all of this college basketball season.
