The big rivalry game will be most remembered for a bizarre occurrence just seconds into the ballgame, and not at all for the final result. Plus another bizarre result is in the SEC, some head-scratchers in another conference, and a past champion wins a game that influences the current race in their league.
It has not been the best of seasons for the Missouri Valley Conference so far, but a big midseason showdown is coming after Loyola and Illinois State won on Wednesday. Also, St. John’s bounces back in the Big East and a Maine native has a historic performance for his homestate Black Bears.
In the midst of conference play, a big set of non-conference games grabbed center stage for the day. It was a close series and home teams dominated, and as it turns out, we will have more of it in the future.
On Tuesday night, we saw two teams in the Midwest continue to go in opposite directions. Plus a couple of buzzer-beaters, some ACC and SEC games that didn’t require them, and a Commodore will be gone as expected.
On a day where a football team in the same area grabbed everyone’s attention, an ACC team got their first conference win in fine fashion. Plus a healthy win this time around in the Big East, the Hawkeyes seemingly couldn’t miss, and one team continues to dominate of late in a Pac-12 series.
A wild night included surprise results and a conference scoring record broken by the same star who held it before. Plus one SEC team is hard to figure out, a Big 12 team is not in a good place, and an expected dandy out west was just that.
Saturday was a wild day full of Power 5 teams losing to mid-majors, with one struggling conference being the worst offender. Plus a rivalry game tells us something about the winner, a big man returns to action, and one undefeated team falls at the buzzer while another one beats a good road team.
After Saturday’s loss, what do we make of Kentucky at this point given that they have lost to their toughest opponents while beating up on worse teams? Plus lots of rivalry games were on tap, while one school couldn’t travel for their game and saw it canceled.
The Jimmy V Classic was another good doubleheader, with the second game telling us more about one team and its growing pains than the other. Plus one team brings a four-game losing streak into a long final exam break, another loses a big man, and blowing a big lead and losing the game makes it a bad loss.
One bubble team might have secured its spot in the NCAA Tournament, and all in a blur at the end of a road game. Plus an even wilder game up north, more early conference tournament action, and trial rule changes yet again in a postseason tournament.
