Presenting our annual list of what we simply call our list of teams to keep an eye on coming into the season. Some fall in the category of up-and-coming teams or sleeper picks. Some are powers. Some are just teams we enjoy watching. In most cases, we just think these are teams you’re going to be hearing from before the end of this year.
The 2016-17 season continued a run of a bumpy couple of years for the Horizon League, with more than its share of changes and challenges.
As conference tournaments beckon, we get ready for lots of lobbying for teams’ at-large candidacy to the NCAA Tournament and highlight one team that will be much-talked about. Plus a shocker in Orlando and an important result in the Big Ten lead the way.
As the regular season starts drawing to a close, a few more regular season titles are decided or almost decided. Plus the story in Omaha continues to develop and a Volunteer is likely to miss another game.
Oakland makes the Horizon League race a little more interesting as it winds down. Also, for the second straight Friday, it was a good night to be a road team.
It was a rather docile first full weekend of January, early in the conference portion of the college basketball season. Here are some quick hit notes from around the country, from A (Arizona) to…well, at least W (Western Illinois):
For a year at least, the Horizon League harkened back to some glory years, with a collection of individual talent the conference hasn’t seen in perhaps a long time.
With the 2015-16 season now complete, attention turns to news about college basketball players making decisions on entering the NBA Draft-some going, some thinking of going, some staying.
The college basketball season is a journey in every way, and few demonstrated that better this year than Old Dominion. The Monarchs’ 2014-15 campaign was truly a long and eventful one, full of ups and downs, successes and disappointments. It may not have always lived up to expectations on the outside, but there were plenty of reasons for that. Still, it would be hard to argue that ODU didn’t make the best of it.
The championship game for the 79th annual National Invitation Tournament is set, and it’s a worthy one with two very good teams. How good? Put it this way: if Oklahoma and Syracuse end up playing in the NCAA Tournament final on Monday, their combined win total will be less than that of the two playing in the NIT title game.
