Saturday was a reminder of one day that reflects the challenge college basketball has in starting earlier every year. Football drives the train in college sports, and on this day it is evident for the first month or so of the season. We also look at a few more conferences before the season.
In our latest podcast, we spent most of our time looking at UConn officially heading back to the Big East in most sports, and all of its ramifications – how it affects football, men’s basketball, the Big East and the American Athletic Conference. We also look at news of two big transfers in college basketball.
The 2019 NBA Draft was thought to be a weak one, and thus one without much separation after the top picks. There were still some real surprises, with two players leading that discussion, and also a great scene to start the evening.
Mike Daum’s terrific career at South Dakota State finished up this year. Surprisingly, it didn’t include another Summit League tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance, as this time it was North Dakota State returning to postseason supremacy.
On a night with five automatic bids handed out, one of them was a shocker to gain a second bid for the league. Plus it wasn’t a good night for higher seeds, and one more coach is out.
Wofford struck for an incredible run in the final minutes to rally for the Southern Conference title to cap an incredible run through the league, while UNC Greensboro now waits. Plus, more conference tourney roundups, and firings showing where schools’ priorities still are.
Three more tickets are punched, and all three seemed unlikely in one way or another. Plus a few semifinals are set while others are right behind them, an unexpected outright regular season title, and a couple of Big Ten teams need to stop the bleeding.
Few have been talking about the ACC regular season co-champions despite the incredible season they have had. Plus one team is now officially in the field, upsets rule a couple of conference tournaments, and one team backs into an outright regular season title.
Creighton mowed down Missouri-Kansas City in the only game in NCAA Division I Thursday night, but the Bluejays and their high-powered offense have work to do over the next few months to make the NCAA Tournament.
After the last day without a Division I game for a few months, we look at how the conferences shape up since non-conference play is just about in the books. Plus a story from the gridiron that seems to unbelievable to be a coincidence.
