The big rivalry game will be most remembered for a bizarre occurrence just seconds into the ballgame, and not at all for the final result. Plus another bizarre result is in the SEC, some head-scratchers in another conference, and a past champion wins a game that influences the current race in their league.
A wild night a couple of nights ago was followed up by a relatively ho-hum evening. Plus one team’s misery ends while another begins, mediocrity reigns out west, and a Fighting Camel climbs an all-time list a little further.
In our latest podcast, we look back at a big game in the ACC, one that could have implications beyond the game itself. Then we look at an ACC team that has picked up a couple of big wins in its rebuilding process, a fun SEC, a bizarre incident on Wednesday night and further Division I expansion that is coming up.
Coming off a 14-point home loss to Georgia Tech, Syracuse was apparently right where it wanted to be heading into Duke, where-sure enough-the Orange stunned the top-ranked team. Plus, Pittsburgh growing up fast, Nebraska wins on the road and buzzer-beaters in the MEAC.
So much for any talk about one team possibly going undefeated, and given that their conference is better than some think despite its downward trend, there are teams capable of beating them anyway. Plus no surprises in one big conference, while it was a good day to be a road team in another, and a mild surprise in an academic league opener.
Yes, that is correct: Buffalo won at Syracuse, and it was not an upset. Plus a newly revived rivalry has some gasoline thrown on it, more in the saga of a fired Husky alum and coach, and a Wildcat will be out for a lot of conference play.
After Saturday’s loss, what do we make of Kentucky at this point given that they have lost to their toughest opponents while beating up on worse teams? Plus lots of rivalry games were on tap, while one school couldn’t travel for their game and saw it canceled.
There was plenty of drama and a lot of good basketball, and in the end the ACC/Big Ten Challenge ended up even. Plus Big East teams add wins, a Bonnie is finally back in action, and a couple of monster games with teams on opposite ends of the bottom line.
As the early season tournaments get going, impressions are made, especially the one made by Iowa in New York. Plus a number of other tournaments get going or have later action, and wildfires in California continue to impact games.
After another impressive performance in the final game of the 2018 National Invitation Tournament, the springboard has officially been set for Penn State next season.
