St. John’s and St. Bonaventure. What a night it was Wednesday for a pair of Catholic schools in New York on the college basketball scene. Also, if anyone has been lulled into thinking there are three teams this season far and away above everyone else? Wednesday night provided the reality check.
There just might be a team finally ready to break free of the mass of sameness in the Missouri Valley, as Loyola Chicago took hold of first place at the halfway mark in resounding fashion Wednesday night in a battle for first at Drake.

It was time for a wild college basketball Saturday, and we sure got one yesterday. A busy and varied schedule was filled with surprises, upsets that maybe weren’t really that big of upsets, as well as near-upsets. There was something for just about everyone, and it had all the feeling of one of those Saturdays in the midst of conference schedules where also rans rise up to topple powers, but at least a month earlier than we usually get them.
We roll on with a look at our favorite games for every day of the season, our ultimate dream road trip through an entire college basketball year, with a look at January.
The ancient Southern Conference continues to show strength in the years after the loss of one of its premier programs, and a superb conference race highlighted an excellent overall year for the league.
March Madness is here, and it’s only February. The first NCAA Division I conference tournament opened Monday night, as the Atlantic Sun-always near the top of the alphabetical D-I conference standings listings-also tipped off the tournament season.
Hoops on the west coast is alive, well and healthy, as three of its top teams showed last night when UCLA, Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga all were ultra-impressive again.
When all was said and done, there was just nothing that could stop Tennessee-Chattanooga’s re-emergence in 2015-16 as the Southern Conference’s best team.
The Southern Conference was expected to dearly miss Davidson, but Wofford stepped seamlessly into the Wildcats’ role and helped the ancient conference again make a few national ripples.
