Indiana: Hoosiers Face NCAA Violations

Hoosiers Face NCAA Violations: The NCAA has delivered a list of violations committed by Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff in 2006 and 2007. The association gave the report to Indiana this week. It relates to 100 phone calls made by Sampson and his staff that violate his probation terms. Before arriving in Bloomington, Sampson committed recruiting violations at Oklahoma by making 577 impermissible calls during a five-year period. The university took action last year for the recent offenses. It stripped Sampson of a $500,000 pay raise and docked the team one scholarship for next season.

Update: With the NCAA’s report becoming public today, Sampson is facing widespread criticism from the media and Indiana officials. The evolving situation threatens Sampson’s job, especially because his contract contains a clause that would let the university fire Sampson if he violates NCAA rules. The NCAA’s report provides details on violations involving the improper phone calls to recruits. The report states that Sampson occasionally had assistant coaches call recruits then hand Sampson the phone. He also participated in conference calls and three-way calls. The NCAA added that assistant coach Jeff Meyer improperly gave recruit Derek Elston a T-shirt and backpack at a Hoosiers summer camp. In addition to the violations, the NCAA said in the report that Sampson lied to investigators. [2/13/08]
