Tournament Rules and Regulations

  • Play will consist of two halves, each of which is 16 minutes stopped time. (For 10-under to 13-under, each half is 14 minutes stopped time except for playoff games.)

  • Halftime will be three minutes.

  • If necessary, overtime will be two minutes. If the game is still tied after two two-minute overtime periods, the teams will play without a clock, first to score three points wins.

  • Teams get two full timeouts (60 seconds in length) and one 30-second timeout per game. For each overtime session, each team will get an additional 30-second timeout.

  • A player will be disqualified from the game after five fouls.

  • Seven team fouls in a half will lead to a one-and-one penalty, while ten fouls will be a two-shot penalty.

  • Mercy rule: if the scoring margin is 20 or more points with less than four minutes to play, play will continue as running time except during a timeout.

  • Any player or coach who is ejected from a game during the tournament is automatically suspended for his team’s next game. If a player or coach is ejected from a second game, he is automatically suspended for the remainder of the tournament. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

  • Only two coaches (head coach and one assistant) are allowed on the bench for each game and are allowed to get in for free. There is a roster limit of 12 players.

  • Forfeits/tardiness: A game will be a forfeit if a team is more than 15 minutes late. If a team arrives within 15 minutes of the tip, the first half will be played with eight minutes and 10 points will be awarded to the team that arrived on time.

  • Each team is responsible for either a timer or a scorekeeper at each game.

  • Teams must bring their own practice balls. The game ball is the responsibility of the head referee.

  • Roster rule: a player’s age is based on his age as of September 1, 2012.

  • Unless otherwise stated, college rules apply.

Tie-Breaker Scenarios

First tie-breaker is head-to-head result

Second tie-breaker is point differential – note that the maximum point differential for a team is 15 points. Forfeits are scored +15 for the winning team.

Third tie-breaker is points allowed – the team allowing the fewest points will advance so long as they did not forfeit along the way.

2012-13 Big Sky Conference Preview

November 22, 2012 by

In 2012-13, a couple of consistent powerhouses should remain contenders, including one who lost an NBA lottery pick. In addition, teams with new head coaches are headed for rebuilding years.
