Georgetown: Cancer Touches Another Legendary Coaching Family

Cancer Touches Another Legendary Coaching Family: Last night’s Jimmy V Classic, benefiting cancer research, hits home a little harder for Georgetown coach John Thompson III. His wife, Monica, has breast cancer and underwent surgery shortly after Thanksgiving. The family is keeping most details private, but Thompson acknowledged the situation and said it has been difficult. The Jimmy V Classic airs on ESPN and honors the late coach Jimmy Valvano, who died of cancer after openly battling the disease for years. He also led the North Carolina State Wolfpack to a 1983 championship. St. Joseph’s defeated Kansas 70-67 in the opener of the doubleheader from Madison Square Garden, and Michigan State knocked off Boston College 77-70 in the nightcap. [12/07/05]
