Southern Illinois: Saluki Assistant Falls in Barton Scandal

Saluki Assistant Falls in Barton Scandal: Southern Illinois assistant coach Shane Hawkins submitted his letter of resignation after he was indicted during a federal investigation involving Barton County, Kan., Community College. He is accused of making a false statement to a grand jury in the case. Hawkins worked at Barton for three years, during which school officials repeatedly violated NCAA rules. For example, coaches helped athletes receive grants for which they didn’t qualify, money for jobs they didn’t work and extensive help for courses and tests. They also sent falsified credentials to other schools when players sought to transfer. [12/20/05]
