Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament: No. 4 Gardner – Webb and No. 5 East Tennessee State provided the best game of the day so far in the Atlantic Sun Tournament thanks to a game-winning basket with less than a second remaining. The Bulldogs won 64-63 thanks to senior guard Tim Jennings’ layup on an inbounds play with less than a second remaining. The thriller eliminates the Bucs, who were hosting the tournament in their first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Gardner – Webb moves on to play No. 1 Lipscomb Friday.
No. 1 Lipscomb got the Atlantic Sun Tournament started with a 78-62 pounding of No. 8 Mercer. The Bisons defeated the Bears behind 18 points from junior guard Brian Fisk and junior swingman Eddie Ard, and they move on to play No. 4 Gardner – Webb Friday.
No. 2 Belmont dispatched with No. 7 Campbell 90-76 in the second game from Johnson City, Tenn., today. The Bruins pulled away in the second half after trailing by two at halftime, and they used sensational three-point shooting to beat the Camels. Led by sophomore guard Justin Hare’s 24 points and three three-pointers, Belmont shot nearly 50 percent from the field and drained 11 three-pointers. The Bruins play No. 6 Stetson Friday.
The Hatters continue to play some of the best basketball in the Atlantic Sun Conference as Stetson upset No. 3 Florida Atlantic 54-44. The Hatters have won 12 of their last 13 and can avenge the only loss in that span against Belmont Friday. Senior guard Anthony Register led the Hatters with 20 points in the win.
