Big South Conference Tournament: No. 1 Winthrop advanced to the Big South Conference Tournament championship game by beating No. 5 High Point 77-65. Junior guard Torrell Martin led the Eagles with 21 points to help Winthrop hold off the Panthers after falling behind with five minutes remaining. Winthrop scored 10 quick points to reclaim the lead and cruise to the victory. The Eagles will play No. 2 Coastal Carolina, which swept them in the regular season.
Coastal Carolina handled No. 6 Charleston Southern 73-67 despite needing to fend off the Bucs’ second-half rally. The Chanitcleers, winners of 11 straight, built an 18-point halftime lead that Charleston Southern whittled away for much of the second half, though they fell short at the end. [3/02/06]
