West Coast Conference Tournament: No. 5 San Diego beat No. 8 Pepperdine 85-72, setting up a quarterfinal match up with No. 4 San Francisco Saturday. Brandon Johnson led the Toreros with 24 points, pacing San Diego to better than 50 percent shooting from the field.
No. 6 Santa Clara beat No. 7 Portland 72-68 in the other opening round game of the WCC Tournament and will play No. 3 St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals Saturday. The game was close throughout, and Travis Niesen led Santa Clara to the victory with 18 points.
