MAAC: Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament

Championship Week 2006
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament:Senior guard Keydren Clark hit a runner with 10 seconds remaining, which proved to be the game winner as No. 5 St. Peter’s advanced past No. 4 Siena 63-62. Clark’s 22 points put him over the 3,000 career scoring mark and into seventh on the all-time list. Siena’s home court was not an advantage in the final five seconds as junior guard Mike Beers could not connect on two attempts at the end. St. Peter’s will face top-seeded Manhattan in the semifinals Sunday.

No. 9 Canisius made up an 11-point second-half deficit but could not pull off its second upset in as many days as No. 3 Marist moved past the Golden Griffins 68-62. Junior guard Will Whittington’s 14-point second-half output ensured the Red Foxes a trip to the semifinals against No. 2 Iona. Whittington finished with 17 points while junior guard Jared Jordan added 14 points in the victory. Senior guard Kevin Downey led the Griffins with 16 points as the Griffins lost for the 20th time season.

Iona will see the semifinals for the 15th time in MAAC tournament history after handling No. 7 Niagara 80-54. Senior guard Steve Burtt had 25 points and senior forward Kiril Wachsmann added 20 as Iona knocked off the team that eliminated it from the tournament the past three seasons. Senior forward James Mathis’ career ended five minutes early as he, followed by junior guard J.R. Duffey, fouled out leaving the Niagara Purple Eagles with only five available players to finish the contest. Iona will play Marist in the semifinals Sunday. [3/04/06]
