West Coast Conference: West Coast Conference Tournament

Championship Week 2006
West Coast Conference Tournament: No. 5 San Diego won its second game in two days by defeating No. 4 San Francisco 62-59, setting up a semifinal match up with No. 1 Gonzaga Sunday. Gonzaga earned a bye into the semifinals, so the Toreros will play their third game in three days while Gonzaga plays its first game in almost a week. Against San Francisco, senior forward Nick Lewis led the Toreros with 17 points, and San Diego got a goaltending call against the Dons in the final minute to take a 60-59 lead, which they refused to surrender.

No. 3 St. Mary’s outlasted No. 6 Santa Clara 76-72 in overtime, spoiling the heroics of senior guard Joe Kaempf, who hit a game-tying three-pointer as time expired in regulation. In overtime, the Gaels drained 9-of-12 free throw attempts to seal the victory. Freshman forward Diamon Simpson led St. Mary’s with 20 points and 11 rebounds, sending the Gaels to the semifinals and a date with No. 2 Loyola – Marymount.
