Big East: Big East Conference Championship

Championship Week 2006

Big East Conference Championship: No. 9 Syracuse completed one of the greatest runs in Big East Conference Tournament history with a 65-61 championship victory against No. 6 Pittsburgh. The memory of this tournament will be the heroics of senior guard Gerry McNamara, recently dubbed “overrated” by Syracuse’s own student newspaper. McNamara fueled the final victory with 14 points and six assists, including three three-pointers. McNamara set a conference tournament record by hitting 16 three-pointers in four games, in addition to leading the charge for three last-second victories against No.8 Cincinnati, No. 1 Connecticut and No. 5 Georgetown. The Orange have jumped from an NCAA Tournament bubble team to a possible top six seed. [3/11/06]
