Second Round [3/18/06]

NCAA Tournament 2006
Atlanta Region – Second Round: No. 1 Duke opened the day’s action with an easy 74-61 victory against No. 8 George Washington. J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams led the Blue Devils once again, but freshmen Josh McRoberts and Greg Paulus provided more support than they did in the first-round game against No. 16 Southern. Redick scored 20 points while Williams had 17 points and 14 rebounds. But the contributions of McRoberts and Paulus kept the Colonials off balance on defense throughout the game. McRoberts finished with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds while Paulus added 10 points and dished out six assists. Duke will play No. 4 LSU in the Sweet 16.

No. 4 LSU survived another NCAA Tournament thriller against No. 12 Texas A&M thanks to Darrel Mitchell. After the Aggies had taken a two-point lead with 20 seconds remaining on Acie Law’s basket, Mitchell drained a deep three-pointer with less than five seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 58-57 victory against Texas A&M. Glen “Big Baby” Davis led the Tigers with 21 points, including a critical layup that tied the game late, setting up the frantic finish. [3/18/06]
