Fresno State: Bad Omen for Sampson?

Bad Omen for Sampson?: The NCAA has given Fresno State four years of probation for violations that occurred under the watch of former coach Ray Lopes, who made hundreds of impermissible calls to recruits. The NCAA was harsher with Lopes, giving him a three-year show-cause restriction that means he can’t seek employment without special NCAA consideration and approval. Fresno State has a history of infractions, which was a factor in the NCAA’s decisions. Lopes worked with Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson when the two were at Oklahoma, which is now under review for the same offenses. Based on the Fresno State case, the NCAA seems to consider phone violations a relatively serious offense, which does not bode well for Sampson and his former Sooner employers. [4/27/06]
