College of Charleston: Cremins Returns to the Sidelines

Cremins Returns to the Sidelines: The College of Charleston has ended its drama-filled coaching search after hiring former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins. Cremins returns to the sidelines after retiring in 2000 and working as a TV analyst in recent years. He coached the Yellow Jackets for 19 years and helped turn the program into an elite ACC destination for recruits such as Stephon Marbury, Kenny Anderson and John Salley. Before coaching Georgia Tech, Cremins had several years of success at Appalachian State, which is one of the Cougars’ Southern Conference rivals.

The Cremins hire is ironic because he spurned South Carolina in the same way that Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall rejected the Cougars last week. The College of Charleston had offered the job to Marshall, who accepted it June 28 and then changed his mind by the end of June 29. Marshall returned to Winthrop, leaving the Cougars without a coach. Cremins did the same thing to South Carolina 13 years ago. He had accepted the job at his alma mater, then quickly changed his mind and returned to Atlanta and the Yellow Jackets. He joked that Marshall had “pulled a Bobby Cremins.” [7/07/06]
