Winthrop: Marshall Accepts, Then Denies Charleston Job

Marshall Accepts, Then Denies Charleston Job: In one of the weirder coaching switches this off-season, the College of Charleston selected up-and-coming Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall, who accepted the job — for all of about 24 hours. Shortly after the Cougars introduced their latest coach last week, Marshall reconsidered the offer and opted to remain in Rock Hill, S.C., with the Eagles. Winthrop has reached six NCAA Tournaments in Marshall’s eight years at the school, and he is widely considered to be one of the top candidates to move into a more prestigious job. The College of Charleston spot could have been a launching pad to an ACC or SEC gig in the next few years. But Marshall decided his home in Winthrop is happy enough for now. [7/06/06]
