Siena: Siena Guard in a Battle

Siena Guard in a Battle: Kojo Mensah considered transferring from Siena a year ago, after Fran McCaffery took over, but he eventually decided to give the new coaching staff a chance. This year, the Brooklyn native wants out again. But McCaffery and Siena athletic director John D’Argenio not only denied Mensah’s request to transfer but also stripped Mensah’s scholarship.

Mensah received a letter that states that the school won’t renew his scholarship. Mensah said the letter arrived one day after his father brokered a conditional release from D’Argenio, meaning Mensah could leave but not transfer to specific schools. He averaged 16.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game last season. The Saints finished 15-13 after going 6-24 the year before McCaffery arrived.

The options remaining for Mensah is to beg for his scholarship back and play, or he can transfer to another school where he would have to pay his own way and sit out next season because of transfer rules. [7/16/06]
