Panel Denies Parole for Pierce: Former Iowa Hawkeye Pierre Pierce must remain in prison until Sept. 24 after an Iowa parole panel rejected his bid for early release. One of the five panelists refused to let Pierce free early, and he needed unanimous consent to earn parole. Pierce was serving a two-year sentence for third-degree burglary, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, false imprisonment and fourth-degree criminal mischief — charges that resulted from an incident with his ex-girlfriend. A judge slashed the sentence in half after Pierce demonstrated good behavior and completed a sex offender course. [8/15/06]
