NCAA: Northeastern State to Drop Nickname

Northeastern State to Drop Nickname: To comply with an NCAA ruling on “hostile or abusive nicknames,” Northeastern State University has decided to drop its Redmen nickname. The school informed the NCAA of its decision Sept. 29 and will begin considering more than 400 suggestions for a new nickname. Neal Weaver, vice president for university relations, said finalists will be announced next week, and by May 2007, a new name, logo and mascot will take effect. Weaver said the reason the school won’t change nicknames any sooner is because several teams are competing as the Redmen, and they don’t want to force them to change in the middle of the season.
