Chief Illiniwek Appears For The Last Time: At the University of Illinois’ men’s basketball game Wednesday night, the beloved Chief Illiniwek appeared for the last time. After his halftime performance, thousands in the normally orange-filled arena pulled off their orange t-shirts to reveal black ones underneath, mourning the death of the chief. The chief has been targeted by activists for about 20 years, and some activists also want the university to drop the Fighting Illini nickname. [2/22/07]
