Kansas State: No Chickens at Kansas State

No Chickens at Kansas State: An animal rights group’s complaint will likely put an end to Kansas State’s chicken-toss tradition. For years, Kansas State fans have smuggled live chickens into games against Kansas and thrown them onto the court and behind the visiting team’s bench before tip-off, a prank intended to mock Kansas’ mascot, the Jayhawk. But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to university president Jon Wefald complaining about the mistreatment of the animals. As a result, the athletic department at Kansas State has issued a statement Tuesday warning fans to not bring animals or throw any objects onto the court. Anyone failing to comply the warning will get ejected and could face prosecution. [3/01/07]
