Southern Conference: Southern Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

Championship Week 2006
Southern Conference Tournament Quarterfinals: No. 1 Davidson didn’t look the part of a conference tournament favorite in a lackluster 78-68 win against No. 8 Chattanooga. Junior guard Jason Richards and freshman guard Stephen Curry each scored 20 points to lead Davidson through a poor shooting night. The Wildcats will play No. 5 Furman Saturday in the semifinals after the Paladins beat No. 4 UNC-Greensboro 73-71. Furman built a 12-point lead late in the game and then survived a furious Spartan rally.

To open the evening session in Charleston, No. 2 Appalachian State took out No. 7 Western Carolina 78-59. Senior guard D.J. Thompson led the Mountaineers with 15 points in only 26 minutes of play. He was one of only two Mountaineers to log more than 25 minutes, so Appalachian State should have a fresh team against No. 3 College of Charleston Saturday night. As the host of the Southern Conference Tournament, the Cougars will have the crowd behind them as they did in the quarterfinal 77-66 win against No. 6 Georgia Southern. Senior guard Dontaye Draper entertained the crowd with a game-high 23 points. [3/01/07]
