Weekend Roundup – January 31st

A quick rundown of this weekend’s action from around the nation, and a call to break-up the streaking Northwestern Wildcats.

Northwestern 66, Wisconsin 63: Break up the Wildcats, as they have suddenly won four of five and are ahead of Michigan and Wisconsin, two teams who entered Big Ten play looking like at-large candidates.

Connecticut 94, Providence 61: The Friars stayed with the Huskies for a half, but UConn took the game over a few minutes into the second half and it was never a ballgame after that.

Pittsburgh 93, Notre Dame 80: Notre Dame has now lost five straight after this one.  DeJuan Blair had a monster game for the Panthers with 23 points and 22 rebounds.

Marquette 94, Georgetown 82: The Golden Eagles keep winning, going to 8-0 in the Big East.  How many would have figured that before the season?

Louisville 69, West Virginia 63: The Cardinals remain red-hot as they have won nine straight, while the Mountaineers are 4-4 in the Big East.

Georgia Tech 76, Wake Forest 74: The Yellow Jackets get their first ACC win, and a big one as they take out the Demon Deacons.

Maryland 73, Miami 68: The Hurricanes are now starting at a three-game losing streak and are 3-5 in the ACC.

UCLA 97, Stanford 63: The Bruins won this going away thanks to a big second half, where they scored 56 points.

Washington 84, Arizona State 71: The Huskies bounce back from Thursday night’s loss in Tucson with a quality road win.

Arizona 66, Washington State 56: The Wildcats desperately needed a home sweep of the Washington schools and got exactly that.  They’re now 4-5 in the Pac-10.

USC 73, California 62: The Trojans have won five of six to take over third place in the Pac-10, while the Golden Bears continue to fall on hard times as they are now 5-4.

Oregon State 57, Oregon 54: The Ducks’ woes continue, as they fall to 0-9 in the Pac-10.  Meanwhile, the Beavers are quietly 4-5 and in a three-way tie for sixth place.

Kansas State 85, Texas 81: A big win for the Wildcats that could help get them going.  Denis Clemente had 44 to lead the way.

Missouri 89, Baylor 72: The Tigers are quietly 5-2 in the Big 12, while the Bears continue to come back to earth as they are 3-4.

Gonzaga 64, San Diego 47: The Bulldogs sweep the two top contenders in the first go-round less than 48 hours apart.

Portland 84, St. Mary’s 66: Without Patrick Mills, St. Mary’s is just all right.  Diamon Simpson is a first team All-WCC player, but the Gaels are struggling to get him the ball to score.  But the Pilots aren’t bad, as they’re 6-1 in the WCC after this home win.

LSU 79, Arkansas 69: While Arkansas’ slide continues (1-5 in the SEC), LSU rises to 5-1 in the SEC.

South Carolina 78, Kentucky 77: A nice win for the Gamecocks, who now tie with the Wildcats with identical 5-2 SEC marks.

Xavier 82, Massachusetts 80: The Musketeers hold off the Minutemen to improve to 7-0 in the Atlantic 10.

Utah State 83, Fresno State 77 (OT): They may have needed a few more minutes, but the Aggies just keep on winning as their streak reaches 16 games.

Northeastern 73, Delaware 59: The Huskies stay on top in the CAA, improving to 10-1 with another fine defensive effort.

Drexel 60, Towson 53: The Dragons remain the CAA’s surprise team as they improve to 8-3.

Northern Iowa 61, Indiana State 57: The Panthers are up three games on everyone else in the Missouri Valley, improving to 10-1.

Rutgers 75, DePaul 56: This goes in the “somebody has to win” column, as both teams entered the game 0-8 in the Big East.  It wouldn’t be a shock if the Blue Demons don’t win a Big East game.

Mount St. Mary’s 65, Wagner 51: After some early struggles, the Mountaineers have won eight straight and are trying to stay on Robert Morris’ heels in the NEC with an 8-3 mark.

Morehead State 81, Austin Peay 63: The Eagles take over sole possession of first place by winning this early Ohio Valley showdown.

Cornell 64, Yale 32: The Big Red look primed to run the table in the Ivy League again, improving to 4-0 with two wins by more than 30 points this weekend.

Princeton 77, Harvard 71: Don’t look now, but the Tigers have started Ivy League play 2-0, both wins coming on the road.
