Memphis: School Officials Talk Violations With NCAA

Memphis officials attended a hearing that the NCAA Infractions Committee held to discuss reported violations and the academic record of a former player, believed to be Derrick Rose. School officials said they could not comment on the proceedings but reiterated their stance that the team should not vacate any of the 38 wins from the 2007-08 season that ended with a loss in the championship game to Kansas.

According to an NCAA letter to Memphis, the team provided improper financial support to a player. That same player had his SAT score vacated by the organization that grades the test because it believed the player had someone else take the test. If those charges turn out to relate to Rose, it would accompany another report that someone in the Chicago Public Schools system changed one of his grades.

The news about Memphis’ troubles first came out in late May. University officials issued a response to the charges in which they said the Tigers should not have to vacate any wins. To add to the negative press, reports surfaced last week that former Tiger Robert Dozier had some suspicious academic activity in high school that led Georgia to deny him admission.
