Teams at Kansas Universities to Be Subject to Audits

According to an AP report, Kansas state universities will be required to conduct regular audits that include their athletic departments. The Kansas Board of Regents voted the regulation into effect Thursday after it was revealed that Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder and others received large sums of money in undocumented payments.

Last week, a Kansas State audit disclosed 13 undocumented payments ($845,000 total) to Snyder, former athletic director Tim Weiser and former vice president Bob Krause. The audit, however, did not make public a reported agreement between Krause and former football coach Ron Prince to pay the latter more than $3 million in deferred compensation. Prince was fired in November after three seasons and with a losing record.

University president Jon Wefald claims he didn’t know about the deal. Kansas State will try to invalidate it through the legal system.

“I really couldn’t follow what [Krause] had in mind,” Wefald said. “I don’t think anybody knows. Maybe he thought (Prince) was going to win nine or 10 games.”
