Samford: Griffin Dies of Probable Heart Condition While Sleeping

Samford’s Jim Griffin was found dead Tuesday in his residence hall, according to an Associated Press report. Griffin apparently died in his sleep, and although an autopsy is pending, it is believed his death was caused by an undetectable heart condition.

A university spokesman said Griffin played in a pickup game and lifted weights Monday night. Samford coach Jimmy Tillete said Griffin hadn’t had a previous medical condition.

“It’s devastating for our team right now,” Tillette said. “He was a sixth man, but he was everybody’s favorite guy. He was probably our least athletic guy but got the most out of it.”
