How can a player’s rating increase when he doesn’t log a single minute of action?
If you’re using Hoopville’s Total Impact Quotient as your standard for comparison, you can see a ratings increase without playing if the rest of a team become less productive during one player’s absence. And that’s what has happened to Seton Hall without superstar Jeremy Hazell.
The senior scoring dynamo hurt his wrist against Alabama in November and hasn’t played since. He also was shot in an attempted robbery on Christmas, though he escaped without any significant injuries. Meanwhile, the Pirates have sorely missed the player now rated as the No. 1 guard in the Big East, with a TIQ of 16.1 points per 40 minutes.
Hazell’s TIQ rose by 0.6 points because the rest of the Pirates are shooting horribly in his absence. The team shoots worse than 40 percent from the field and barely 30 percent from three-point range. Hazell has played only three games this season, but he was off to a hot start, shooting nearly 53 percent from the field and 65 percent from long range.
Senior Jamel Jackson is one of the players who sought to fill in for Hazell, but he is shooting 31 percent from the field and has played fewer minutes in the past two weeks. Junior Jordan Theodore also is doing his best to make up for Hazell’s contribution, but he has struggled, shooting 37 percent from the field. Both players’ TIQ has dropped by more than two points in the past few weeks.
