Pac-10 Player Ratings 3.0

Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It takes strong consideration into a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.

Last season, hating on the Pac-10 was en vogue — and easy to do, with plenty of bad losses to provide fodder for the conference’s critics.

This season figures to be a different story, with Arizona and Washington leading the way. The Huskies have played a tough schedule and proven that they can compete with elite squads. In Tucson, the Wildcats also are off to a strong start. And Arizona might also boast the best player in the country.

Sophomore forward Derrick Williams is playing at a ridiculously high level, with a Total Impact Quotient of 20.4 points per 40 minutes. That makes him the best forward in the Pac-10 or any other major conference. At this rate, Williams figures to be one of the top picks in June’s NBA Draft.

Pro scouts must love Williams’ offensive repertoire. He can score in a variety of ways, and he shoots well from everywhere. Williams is making 65 percent of all of his shots, 77 percent from the free throw line and 68 percent from three-point range. Williams is judicious when stepping behind the arc, attempting only 22 three-pointers but making 15 of them. His best attribute might be his aggressive style, which leads to nearly 10 free throw attempts per game.

And Williams doesn’t just look to shoot the ball. He’s leading the team in rebounding, with seven per game, including more than three per game at the offensive end. If there’s any chink in William’s armor, it’s his propensity to commit turnovers. Considering how often the Wildcats run their offense through Williams, it makes sense for him to have more turnovers than others. But he still needs to take care of the ball.
