SEC Player Ratings 3.0

Editors’ note: The Total Impact Quotient is an elaborate ratings formula for players’ performance. It includes strong consideration of a player’s performance relative to the rest of the team. For more information, check out a complete introduction to the TIQ.

Mississippi State has a way of working late-season magic, and the Bulldogs will need Dee Bost to conjure some more of it if the team wants to return to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs have shook off slow starts in the past three seasons to make the NCAA Tournament twice, and they came within a one-point overtime loss to Kentucky of repeating that feat last season. This season, the Bulldogs sit at 10-8 partially because Bost and Renardo Sidney served lengthy early season suspensions.

In his four games back, Bost has made an instant impact and is No. 2 among SEC guards in the Total Impact Quotient at 12.3 points per 40 minutes. Bost’s value is a product of his innate ability to run the offense, averaging 6.5 assists per game. As a team, Mississippi State averages only about 12 per game.

In addition, Bost is a 44 percent shooter on a team that often struggles at 42.5 percent for the season. Although Mississippi State’s offense remains mediocre overall, Bost could make the Bulldogs’ defense significantly better. He has already tallied 12 steals in four games.

As Bost shakes off the rust, the Bulldogs figure to gain momentum against some pretty weak SEC West opponents. At 2-2 in the SEC, Mississippi State likely needs to win 10 or 11 of its final 12 regular-season games to have any shot at an at-large bid. Most likely, Mississippi State will need to pull out its conference tournament spell book to divine another improbable run to the SEC championship game.

Here are the latest ratings for the SEC, through games of Saturday Jan. 22. Players average at least about 10 minutes per game.
